Common use
Duricef (Cefadroxil) is primarily used for managing bacterial infections and it belongs to the class of cephalosporin antibiotics. It is also effective for managing urinary tract infections caused by E.coli, upper respiratory tract infections caused by S.pneumoniae and Haemophilia influenzae as well as skin and soft tissue infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci.
Dosage and direction
Use Duricef (cefadroxil) as ordered by your doctor. Take with or without food. Take with food if it causes an upset stomach. Keep taking Duricef (cefadroxil) as you have been told by your doctor, even if you feel well.
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have an allergy to cefadroxil or any other part of Duricef. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take Duricef (cefadroxil) with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
Contraindications
This medicine is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to Cephalosporin antibiotics. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy due to the risk of cross-reactivity.
Possible side effect
Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect: Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat; Signs of liver problems like dark urine, feeling tired, not hungry, upset stomach or stomach pain, light-colored stools, throwing up, or yellow skin or eyes.
Common side effects of Duricef: Nausea; Vomiting; Diarrhea; Abdominal pain; Skin Rash.
Drug interaction
This medicine may interact with anticoagulants (such as warfarin), potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. It can also interact with medicines used to manage gout (such as probenecid). Additionally, interactions with live bacterial vaccines (like BCG) could reduce the effectiveness of these vaccines, and its use alongside other antibiotics (such as amikacin) could increase the risk of kidney damage.
Missed dose
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
Overdose
An overdose of this medication may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric distress, and seizures. If you observe these symptoms, inform your doctor and follow the advice accordingly.
Storage
Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets. Throw away unused or expired drugs.
