Common use

Mikacin Injection is primarily used to manage various bacterial infections. This medicine belongs to the category of aminoglycoside antibiotics. The medicine helps manage urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, bone and joint infections, meningitis, blood infections like septicemia, and abdominal infections. It is particularly effective against bacteria that are resistant to other types of antibiotics.

Dosage and direction

Only a healthcare professional in a clinical setting should administer this medication. This medicine is administered either intravenously (into a vein) or intramuscularly (into a muscle). Contraindications

Mikacin Injection is contraindicated in pregnancy as amikacin can cross the placenta and cause congenital deafness in the fetus. This medicine is contraindicated while breastfeeding as it can pass into breast milk and adversely affect the nursing baby.
Mikacin Injection is contraindicated if you have a known allergy to amikacin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Patients with severe kidney disease or impaired renal function are contraindicated from using this medicine as it may worsen their condition.
If you have hearing issues, this medicine is contraindicated as it could potentially exacerbate them.

Possible side effect

Mikacin Injection may have the following common side effects: Injection site reactions such as pain, redness, or swelling; Nausea and vomiting; Diarrhea; Headache; Dizziness.

Drug interaction

Loop diuretics: Medicines like furosemide and bumetanide can enhance the concentration of amikacin in your body, increasing the risk of ototoxicity (hearing loss) or nephrotoxicity (kidney damage).
Other antibiotics: Simultaneous use of other antibiotics, such as clindamycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and vancomycin, may increase the risk of kidney damage.
Cisplatin: This cancer medication can enhance the potential for kidney damage and hearing loss when used alongside Mikacin Injection.

Missed dose

If you forget to use the medicine at the scheduled time, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosage schedule. Do not double up on doses without consulting your doctor.

Overdose

Overdose of this injection is unlikely as a healthcare professional administers it. However, consult your doctor if you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or worsening of any other symptoms.

Storage

Store Mikacin Injection under refrigeration at around 2–8°C. Do not freeze. Protect it from light and moisture. Ensure it is kept out of reach of children. Always check the expiry date before use.
