Common use
Hydrocl is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. Hydrocl is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, or edema caused by taking steroids or estrogen. Hydrocl is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Dosage and direction
Take Hydrocl exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Hydrocl can be taken orally (tablets and capsules). Usual dose: 25 mg to 100 mg orally once or twice daily.
Precautions
To make sure Hydrocl is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: kidney disease; liver disease; gout; glaucoma; low levels of potassium or sodium in your blood; high levels of calcium in your blood; a parathyroid gland disorder; diabetes; or an allergy to sulfa drugs or penicillin.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you take Hydrocl during pregnancy, your newborn baby may develop jaundice or other problems. You should not breastfeed while using Hydrocl.
Contraindications
Hydrocl is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to thiazides or other sulfonamide-derived medicines.
It is also contraindicated in patients with anuria (lack of urine) and those with severe kidney disease.
Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Hydrocl.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather.
Possible side effect
Side effects of Hydrocl: Dizziness or lightheadedness; Headache; Fatigue; Muscle cramps; Increased urination.
Drug interaction
This medicine may interact with digitalis glycosides (such as digoxin), antipsychotics (lithium), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (such as ibuprofen and naproxen), and antidiabetic agents (such as insulin and glimepiride).
Missed dose
If a dose of this medicine is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible. If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up the dose to make up for the missed one.
Overdose
An overdose of Hydrocl can cause symptoms such as nausea, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, thirst, and muscle pain or cramps. If you suspect an overdose, you should seek medical attention immediately.
Storage
Store Hydrocl at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and freezing. Keep away from children and pets.
